The Cut is a man-made channel connecting the Gulf with the Lower Laguna Madre. Originally cut through Padre Island in 1957 and rebuilt by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1962, it permanently divided the once-continuous Padre Island into what we now know as Padre Island and South Padre Island. Massive rock jetties extend along the channel, and the area is popular for fishing, wildlife watching, beachcombing and exploring one of the most isolated stretches of the Texas coast.
